I used to dance on my mattress.
I used to jump when it rained.
I used to pray for my family.
My family taught me to pray.
But then I heard about freedom.
Looked like slaves in the trees.
Learned that justice for all,
Is only what we believe.
I used to never get angry.
Heard that anger was bad.
I used to always be sorry.
I used to cry when I laughed.
But then I heard about bravery.
Saw how man could deceive.
And cause I couldn’t get angry,
I’d turn the anger on me.
I used to learn about leaders.
Thought they just wanted to lead.
I used to trust all my teachers,
And all the stories they’d read.
But then I learned that our soil
Is only fertile from life,
That is taken and buried
As we claim sacrifice.
I used to think I could hope.
I used to hope I could change.
I used to change what I hoped for,
But now I think it’s too late.
Cause then I learned about violence.
Got more to say than the truth.
And I learned how my silence,
Screamin’ nothing but proof.
I used to dance on my mattress.
I used to jump when it rained.
I used to pray for my family.
My family taught me to pray.
But then I heard about freedom.
But then I heard about bravery.
But then I heard about violence.
And then I learned about me.
And as I learn about me
I’ll keep learning about you
Learning more about me
Means knowing less of the truth
Learning more about me
Means knowing less of the truth
